Think Like the Knight : What Chess Can Teach Us About Financial Strategy

September 01, 20265 min read

My father was an exceptional chess player.

Growing up, I often watched him study the board, quietly analyzing possibilities before making a move. What fascinated me wasn’t how quickly he played—it was how patiently he thought.

His favorite question was always:

“What’s the plan, Grace?”

At the time, I didn’t realize he was teaching me one of the most important lessons in life and financial planning.

Today, that lesson is reflected in the horse within the NorCal Legacy Financial logo. Most people see a horse. Chess players see the Knight. And the Knight may be the most fascinating piece on the entire board.

♞The Knight Doesn’t Move Like Everyone Else

Every other chess piece moves in straight lines.

The Knight doesn’t.

It moves in an L-shape, approaching opportunities and challenges from angles other pieces cannot.

It can :

♞ jump over obstacles.

♞ Attack from unexpected directions

♞ Create opportunities where others see limitations

That unique movement is what makes the Knight so powerful.

Life works much the same way.

Many people approach financial planning in straight lines.

Work hard → Save money → Invest → Hope everything works out.

But successful financial planning often requires a different perspective.

Sometimes the biggest opportunities come from looking at the problem differently. Sometimes the greatest risks are the ones nobody sees. And sometimes the best move isn’t the obvious move.

♟️The Power of Thinking Several Moves Ahead

One of the greatest mistakes people make with money is focusing only on today’s decision.

A chess player never thinks only about the current move.

They think about

The next move.

The move after that.

And the move after that.

They ask:

“What happens if this works?”

“What happens if it doesn’t?”

“What opportunities will this create?”

“What risks am I exposing myself to?”

Financial strategy requires the same discipline.

Before making decisions, it’s important to consider:

💰 How will taxes affect future income?

💸 What fees am I paying?

👨‍👩‍👧 How will this impact my family?

📉 What happens if markets decline?

🛡️ How do I protect what I’ve worked so hard to build?

The people who build lasting wealth are often those who think several moves ahead.

♞The Knight Sees What Others Miss

One reason the Knight is so valuable is because it attacks from angles many players overlook.

It creates surprises.

It exposes weaknesses.

It reveals opportunities.

The same principle applies to financial planning.

Many people focus entirely on investment returns while overlooking three significant threats:

⚠️ Risk. 💰 Taxes. 💸 Fees.

A portfolio may grow substantially over time, but what matters is how much of that money remains available when it’s needed.

A strategy that ignores taxes can create unnecessary future liabilities.

A strategy that ignores fees can quietly reduce long-term growth.

A strategy that ignores risk can unravel during market volatility.

The Knight teaches us to look beyond the obvious.

To identify challenges before they become problems.

And to uncover opportunities others may miss.

♞ The Knight Can Jump Over Obstacles

This is perhaps the Knight’s most unique ability.

While other pieces must navigate around obstacles, the Knight can leap over them.

That doesn’t mean obstacles disappear. It means there may be another path.

Throughout history, entrepreneurs, investors, and visionaries have succeeded not because they avoided challenges, but because they found creative ways through them.

My father embodied this principle.

He immigrated from the Philippines with a dream of building a better future. He faced challenges, uncertainty, and obstacles along the way.

Yet through persistence, vision, and strategy, he built a successful rental real estate portfolio in California.

He understood that obstacles are often part of the journey.

The question is not whether challenges will appear.

The question is how you will respond?

♟️ Financial Planning Is a Strategy Game

The most successful financial plans are rarely built on luck.

They are built on intentional decisions.

🎯 A clear vision.

🛡️ Thoughtful risk management.

💰 Tax awareness.

💸 Cost efficiency.

♞ The discipline to think long term.

Just as a chess player develops a strategy before making a move, financial decisions deserve the same level of planning.

The goal isn’t simply to accumulate assets.

The goal is to :

Protect them.

Preserve them.

And position them to support the life and legacy you want to create.

❤️ What’s the Plan?

My father passed away, but his lessons remain with me every day.

His favorite question continues to guide my life and my work:

“What’s the plan, Grace?”

It’s a simple question.

Yet it may be one of the most important questions anyone can ask about their financial future.

Because building wealth is one thing. Protecting it is another.

And creating a lasting legacy requires more than hope.

It requires strategy.

Just like the Knight.

♞ Thinking differently.

♞ Seeing opportunities others miss.

♞ Planning several moves ahead.

So take a moment to ask yourself the same question:

What’s the plan?

If your financial strategy hasn’t been reviewed recently, or if you’re unsure whether your current approach aligns with your long-term goals, now may be the right time to take a closer look.

A thoughtful evaluation of your financial plan—or a conversation with a trusted professional—can help you identify opportunities, address potential risks, and build a strategy designed to support the future you envision.

After all, the strongest outcomes rarely come from reacting to the next move alone.

♞ They come from having a plan for the moves ahead.
